The SMU Mustangs have had one crazy rollercoaster ride the last 35 years. This school has the dubious distinction of being the only collegiate football program to receive the death penalty. The school continues to feel the after effects of their program, as the team struggles to stay relevant in the new American Athletic Conference.

South Florida Bulls

The USF Bulls are one of those football programs that seemingly burst onto the national scene overnight. They have consistenly held their own against much larger programs and are contenders almost every year in their conference. After stints in Conference USA and the Big East, the South Florida Bulls accepted an invitation to the new American Athletic Conference.

Tulane Green Wave

The Tulane Green Wave are known more for their academics than athletics. They've been called the "Harvard Of The Southwest" in many circles and are considered to be on the same level, if not higher, than Rice, Tulsa and SMU.

Connecticut Huskies

It seems that the Connecticut Huskies continue to get the short end of the stick. They really haven't been a Division I program for very long, but in that short amount of time, the teams have managed to put together solid winning seasons, while competing in the old Big East. They still cling to the possibility of one day participating in the Atlantic Coastal Conference (ACC), but have yet to receive an invitation. Currently, the football team is competing in the new American Athletic Conference, but I just don't see them remaining there for too much longer.

Mississippi State Bulldogs

The Mississippi State Bulldogs compete in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and are widely considered a mixed bag, when it comes to their level of play. In my opinion, if they were in any other conference, they would fare much better, get to better bowl games and have a bigger impact. Not being in the SEC is blasphemy, however. The Bulldogs have fared well over the last 3 years, appearing in 2 Gator Bowls and a Music City Bowl.

Marshall Thundering Herd

It's been over 40 years, since the Marshall Thundering Herd tragedy. The last decade has seen the program break through numerous barriers. The rebirth of the program has been fun to watch, as they were the most winningest program in America during the 1990s. The color palette for the school is a traditional 2 color scheme.

Penn State Nittany Lions

Instead of rehashing the troubles that will hound the Penn State Nittany Lions for the forseeable future or talk about their sanctions and ineligibility, I would rather focus on the good things that are happening there. The team is having a decent year, although the UCF Knights pulled off an upset victory. The program has several holes and may end up not performing as well as year's past, but given the circumstances, the overall hope is that they play the role of the spoiler, much like the USC Trojans cherished a few years ago.
